Well once I began trying to find a repair for my Xbox 360 RROD, I got overwhelmed by most of the information in existence. There are a gazillion sites, each selling their instruction manuals (usually $24.95. You can get some for free) and and then there are the multitudes of YouTube videos claiming to have discovered the magic cure. The three that I am about to review are what seem like typically the most popular (and many times most absurd).

Number #1 - The Towel Trick - It goes something like this: You take the hard drive off, cover the entire unit in a towel to prevent the surplus heat from escaping, turn the console on approximately 15 minutes to cook (some instructions recommend an hour), shut it down, unplug it for an hour, plug it back in and as promised it works. But why? I haven't heard a good explanation yet. Here is one of the explanations..."the console gets so sizzling hot that it melts the solder that was cracking to the trigger the red lights to start with"..... Allow me to share a few prospective dangers as pointed out in the same instructions "could perhaps damage other parts of the Xbox".... "The device could catch on fire it gets so hot". I must say I will rate this as the 2nd most bizarre Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death fix of the three in consideration. Suggestion: Do not use this fix.

Number #2 - The Ice Bath - I would not even desire to explain how to do this. Basically, a rubbermaid tub is full of ice water, some vinegar is added in, the Xbox 360 is unplugged and submerged within the water/vinegar combination. After so many minutes the console is removed, drained of water and immediately plugged back in. Need I say more. I actually heard of a kid who attempted this and was severely shocked. This as many other fixes was presented as a youtube video. Really it is quite irresponsible and really should be eliminated. This fix is the most preposterous fix of the three in consideration. Recommendation: You should not even give thought to using this repair in case you value your life.

Number #3 - X-Clamp Fix - Here is the only legitimate fix I've noted thus far. It will be as permanent as it gets. Don't use it if however your Xbox 360 is still under warranty. Send the console back to Microsoft and let them honor the warranty. Nonetheless, if your seal is broken and/or it isn't under warranty this fix is the best longterm option. This is actually the fix in summary; you open the console, remove the x-clamps, cleanup the old thermal paste, put new thermal paste on, switch the x-clamps by using screws and washers, reassemble the unit, overheat, allow it cool off and it works on roughly 90% of the units. Suggestion: Utilize this Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error fix.
